What the app needs from a theme
The app embed, which the theme editor lists under App embeds. With it on, each automatic timer finds its spot in the page the theme renders: the Add to cart form for a product timer, the top or bottom of the page for a bar, the main content for a landing timer, and the cart form or drawer for a cart timer.
Custom positions need the app block, and app blocks need a theme whose sections accept them, which is what Online Store 2.0 themes do. The measurements on the performance page were taken on Shopify Horizon theme.
Older themes and page builders
A vintage theme has no sections that accept app blocks, so custom positions are not available on one. The app checks your live theme and says so on the Placement tab instead of offering an app block that would not work. We have not tested the automatic positions on vintage themes. Try it on the Free plan, and write to us with the theme name before you pay for a plan.
A page builder section that accepts app blocks can hold the app block. A product page built by a page builder may use its own Add to cart form, which the automatic product position may not find. In that case, set the timer to Custom position and place the app block inside the builder section.
Switching or upgrading a theme
Your timers live in the app, so a new theme changes none of them. What belongs to a theme is the app embed switch, its cart drawer selector if you set one, and any app blocks. Turn the embed on in the new theme and place the blocks again. The app checks the embed status again when a theme is published, so the app Home tells you if you missed it.
Switching themes, in four steps.
List your app blocks
Note which timers use a custom position and where their blocks sit. Screenshots are faster than notes.
Add the new theme as a draft
Keep it beside the live theme. Do not publish it yet.
Turn on the embed and place the blocks
On the draft, then preview product, collection, and cart pages with items in the cart.
Publish and check the app Home
The embed status should read on for the new live theme.

Running several timers at once
How many timers one page shows, which timer wins when several match, how app blocks add more, and how several timers share the monthly views.
